Excellent research, excellent recipes, excellent book.
Factual, scientific, and realistic. If you enjoy cooking Asian cuisines in their many varied forms, then you'll really enjoy the 'cookbook' part of this book. If you're looking for a better science-based understanding of nutrition and how to improve your health (a la "End of Overeating in America") without the garbage fad headlines-base 'just eat this', then you're really going to enjoy this book. If you need to lose weight and are finally realizing you need to change how you live and not just change how you eat for a few weeks/months, then you're really going to enjoy this book. If you want to get healthy and stay health, then you're going to really enjoy this book. The first half is well laid out, but amazingly thick with information, which is GOOD, then the second half includes a couple hundred recipes across multiple cuisines - not just Japanese - in a well laid-out format that completely tie in with the research.Based on the quality of this book, I've also purchased The Okinawa Program and look forward to the additional insights.

I read this before and haven't had the time to reread it
Ok. This book is lengthy but that is how things go. Here is the synopsis if you are too cheap to buy the book (and this is from my memory btw) (or books as there is another one). Do not eat fast food. Do not eat pork. Do not eat a lot of red meat (a lot is more than one serving, in fact half a serving is best. A serving is the size of a pack of playing cards). Eat plenty of fish, even some shell fish but not a lot of shell fish. Eat plenty of vegetables with the fish. You can have some starches (rice, potatoes etc.). but not a lot. No candy. Healthy snacks (carrot sticks, celery...) Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. Yes. I meant to repeat the word "Walk" four times. Walking is healthy. Walking gets the blood flowing. Walking is good exercise. If you are like me, morbidly obese, even just making a habit of walking to the front yard for a few days and then graduating to walking the fence in your back yard and then going onto walking a block or more till you are walking a few miles a day, is good ("Walk Yourself Thin) is a good book for fatties like me. And that's it. Oh, and need I say no drinking alcoholic beverages (or soft drinks) or smoking? Well don't do that either. Do all this and you will extend your life.

Easy to Make but a Trifle Bland
This is the type of healthy eating that I enjoy. You don’t need crazy ingredients that are hard to find and will eventually sit on your shelf for years. Most of the ingredients can be found in your refrigerator and made in 30 minutes or less. You can’t be a healthy foodie and adore this book. The recipes are designed to make you healthy not satisfy a desire for great food. However, most recipes can be tweaked quite easily for more flavor. (A little Parmesian or salt/pepper goes a long way.)I use the recipes in this book for either lunch or dinner.Overall, I would recommend this book for basic, good for you meals.

A huge relief to find this book!
I've done low carb (Protein Power) for 2.5 years. I lost 30 pounds in the first 6 months, no longer needed any asthma or high blood pressure medications, which I had to take daily before. I gained back 15 pounds and was really unhappy with my eating. My blood pressure went up, my asthma returned (slowly). I had migraine headaches. I truly prayed for some direction - what was I doing wrong? I read plan after plan, Zone, Atkins, South Beach, vegetarian, juicing, but none of it fit.The Okinawa Diet Plan found me when I was in the public library. I have since ordered my own copy. It was the answer to prayer - simply that. I have been following the Eastern path (there are plans for purely eastern diet or eastern/western mix, or western so even if you want to continue eating only American food this will help you). I love Okinawan food anyway, so this is a perfect fit for me.I found the explanations in the book to be very clear and easy to understand, the voice with which the authors speak is relaxed and friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend this book to anyone who is tired of being fat, sick, low in energy. The examples of the Okinawa centurians is the final proof - we don't have to guess IF this way of eating works!Tipping my cup of jasmine tea to your health,:> earthmom

Lots of good recipes
This was a gift for my mom who has adult onset diabetes. I picked it for the plethora of great recipes and discussion of choosing various locally available tubers over the usual white potatoes for the lower sugar thing. I can't remember the correct term but Okinawan potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other atypical stew potatoes are supposed to result in a lower blood sugar when processed in the body. My family has been using the ingredient recommendations for our healthier diet. When we follow it, and increase the greens and decrease the fruits and starches, we have seen significantly less colds. Eating healthy takes a lot more planning and work, however. I visit the area farmer's market several times a month for the fresher, local, and lower priced produce than that available in the supermarkets. The gift recipient, my mom in her early 60's, did complain that the print was too small.

Great book!
Very informative, very thorough and really interesting to read. I lived in Okinawa for 5 years and lived this diet. It really does work! I strongly suggest reading this book if you have an interest and want to live a healthy long life.

It works!
Most recipes and quick and easy to prepare - most importantly, they are quite delicious! Also, both my husband I have lost quite a bit a weight when following the recipes strictly. It doesn't feel like a diet, a majority of recipes are quite filling while still being low in calories so you lose weight with almost no effort. But of course, you have to like Asian food otherwise this will probably not be the plan for you.
