Rf signal source
Does exactly as described! Not fully tested but have had in GHZ range! Might want to buy a wideband amplifier to go with this unless you have a highly sensitive frequency meter! Power output 5 db max from what I’ve seen! But not bad price

Cmon dudes its 60 bucks snap out of it "harmonics " really you it to be lab quality for 60 buck LOL
it works fantastic for 60 bucks and the freq is precise enough , and output levels are way more than is need for my satellite equipment so its all good for me . great product and a great Christmas present for the techie in your list .

Harmonic energy levels are high
For the price, this RF generator is hard to beat.pros: easy to use, very good pricing for the features you get. Documentation is reasonably good.in about 10 minutes you will know how to work all the features.cons: just be aware that the harmonic energy levels are quite high. For example, if you output 700 MHz, you will see harmonic energy at 1400 MHz, 2100 MHz, etc. Those levels can be as high as just 10 dB below the fundamental. So of you are looking for a pure, clean RF output, this will not work for you unless you add external filtering.

Signal Source for Amateur Radio
This is an excellent project for kit-building in amateur radio. I built several antenna preamplifiers from kits for the 2m amateur band. This signal source was what I needed to properly tune these preamplifiers. You will also need some type of attenuator to reduce the output of the signal source to prevent overloading. Overall this was an excellent purchase I would recommend to anyone interested in building RF kits.

Not as advertised
The product comes with a rotary control (Knob) installed - this is is not shown on the picture / product description. The one page manual also does not show the rotary control. In addition, frequency steps are only true below 550 MHz. Above 550 MHz it starts to step in 2 KHz increments and cannot be corrected.Output frequency cannot be calibrated and is off by a fair amount. Also the frequency drifts notably and with temperature changes. The manual contains inaccuracies and conflicting statements.I wish I would have had the manual before purchasing this product. It is likely that I would not have bought as it is of little use to me.

It cannot even be turned on
Took it out of the box. Plugged in the power source (USB C). The power switch was in the OFF position. Tried to turn the product on. Nothing. DOA! Don't buy, don't believe the reviews. Started a return.

Great for producing tones up to 6 GHz at around 0 dBm output or a bit lower at the high freqs
For some reason mine says HMC833 which is still an ADI part and it has similar specs, but weird that the pics and product description has the MAX2870. The HMC833 is actually a slightly more expensive part. Might have to do with availability.I used a signal hound BB60C and Spike for measuring this thing. You can see that it creates pretty strong harmonics, which could be an issue based on what you're trying to do. RF output power is 0 dBm to 9 dBm, at 1 GHz I was measuring 1.3 dBm, although the signal hound isn't a calibrated thing. The datasheet of the part says max output power is 5 dBm. Frequency accuracy wise, it's right on the dot, maybe a few Hz off but I'm not even sure if that's the device or signal hound. It was able to produce a tone at 5.9 GHz just fine, although power was much lower, at -16dBm.Minimum sweep time is 3 ms (product description says 1ms...) so you cant really do a chirp or wideband type signal unless it's over a super short bw. So like over 10 MHz with a 0.1 MHz step it's 0.3s per sweep which is pretty slow, and the only way to make it faster is to increase the step size which turns it from a sweep to more of a hop.UI and touchscreen work pretty well. Didn't play with the clock output. It's really just a single board, the bottom board doesnt have any components on it and I assume is for protection only, which is a nice touch.4/5 mainly because there were multiple details that didnt match the product description.
