There seems to be some confusion over this question. Simply put; if you cannot lock the door from either inside or outside it is not a lock and therefore not fit for purpose. For clarity. To lock this device is to extend the bolt from the door into the door frame. That's it. Nothing further is being asked or advertised for this lock Note, as with any lock, whether used with a key or keypad, someone with a second key or knowing the keypad code, can always unlock the door. This is how it should be, (think of a co-worker or loved one), and does NOT mean you cannot lock the door from inside, it simply means that the lock does not come with a deadbolt, i.e a an additional locking device that you can use inside to stop any further entry. However, this was not asked in the original question, so - and with equal politeness to the user who said, "I politely suggest they mis-interpret the definition of locked", he is simply wrong. His answer was clearly influenced by security reasons beyond the scope of the question, (valid youth hostel concerns), nevertheless his answer is still incorrect. In summary: all locks of this type are lockable from both inside and out. Should you find one that doesn't, it will be from a manufacturer that also sells chocolate teapots.

On a wooden door, yes, but not on a PVC door.

Yes it will latch itself. It can of course be opened from the inside by the little knob but from the outside you have to re-renter the code.
