Q: How do you lock this lock from the outside? Do you have to enter the code to twist the lock prior to leaving?

When I had the same problem, it was because I put it on in reverse: I set it up for a right-hand door when it was a left hand door. When it is on correctly, you just twist the nob toward the door jamb to lock. Code only needed to open,

Q: I really don't like the look of the black rubber that goes around the lock. Can the lock be installed without it?

I can't imagine that it would fit properly without it. The black rubber not only creates a way to avoid scratching the door, it also makes the fit snug so that it doesn't shift (and the whole act like washers). Additionally, it holds the inside of the lock securely so that it doesn't move and stays aligned with the other side of the lock in the door jam.
