Q: Does the connection alternate between 3 to 4 and 3 to 5? So normally 3 to 4 and then when "on", that connection is interrupted & 3 is connected to 5?

Jeff 4 is where the power goes in. 3 & 5 is where the power goes out. With timer off 4 will send power to 3 known as N/C (normally closed light switch on.) With time set at the on time the 4 will moves to 5 sending power out that terminal known as N/O normally open (light switch on.) Hope this helped.

Q: How does it take for the internal battery to charge? after 24 hours on 24vac i can't get any display for programming.

When you use the timer switch for the first time, input AC and charge the inbuilt battery please, then press reset button. The timer switch is at 24-hour mode as default. Press and hold "time" button(bottom left, next to "reset") for 5 seconds till it display "AM" to set to 12-hour mode. Press and hold again "time" button for 5 seconds to set back to 24-hour mode. It has a built-in 1.2V/40mA rechargeable battery and a industrial grade chip, so the unit retains the programming setting even in a power outage.
