TETON-BLACK 180 is a premium-quality, water-bonded foundry sand formulated especially for high temperature metal casting applications in the small shop. When properly used, it can provide exceptional surface finishes with respect to most competing sand products on the market. TETON BLACK 180 uses premium olivine sand which has greater high temperature stability, provides better surface finishes, and provides longer life than silica or other cheaper sands. TETON BLACK 180 is especially well-suited for use as a facing sand--the sand used directly next to the pattern in high-detail casting applications. IMPORTANT: As with all water-bonded foundry sand, TETON BLACK requires active and ongoing management of moisture content by the end user. A single moisture content is not appropriate for all uses so we package TETON BLACK near the minimum usable moisture content with the expectation that the end user will "tune" the moisture content according to their application (facing sand generally is run with less moisture, molding sand with a bit more with a suggested max of 4%). Generally speaking, best performance is attained when using the very minimum moisture possible, while still avoiding mold collapse--experimentation is required to determine appropriate levels for individual user requirements. Addition of moisture to small amounts of sand is best accomplished by using a spray bottle set to fine mist and mixing the water into the sand while spraying. Storing product a in closed, airtight container can help minimize needed water additions, but generally regular additions of water should be expected, including upon initial use. Keep in mind that this intended as a high-performance, professional-use product and as such requires fairly refined techniques to use, possibly running structured experiments, etc to get optimal results. Product is supplied ready-to-use (does not require mulling).
