This is a gorgeous tall porcelain mug from Yellowknives Dene Artist Dawn Oman entitled Spring Bear! The black mug has gold floral bands on the top and bottom and the white polar bear with colorful floral print in the middle. "The hollow shafts of the polar bears fur reflects the light, making it appear white. Spring warmth and nesting instincts reflect a wonderfully joyful light inward to Momma Bears happy heart." The Bear clan members were the strong and steady police and legal guardians (the polar bear with colorful print is repeated on the inner rim). It's 4 ½” tall x 3" opening with a 2 3/8” base and in new condition in a beautiful gift box with a short biography of the artist. It is dishwasher and microwave safe. "My work reflects my fascination with color and the power of a joyful image to bring light to the soul, during our long winters, the dark time, and at any time the spirit is in need of a reminder, that in beauty, there is peace." Dawn Oman was born in Yellowknife, North West Territories, of Yellowknives Dene and Welsh descent. Directly descended from Chief Snuff, who signed Treaty 8 with the Canadian Government, she began to draw as a means of silently amusing herself and staying out of her foster families' way. Dawn's main theme is winter; her snowy bright images capture the essence of the North in the dark time, cold, but full of color. Her use of swirling colors representing the northern lights is a recognizable and recurrent theme throughout her works, as is her bold use of color and brilliant combinations. What began as a way to make herself quietly invisible has brought an exuberant and joyful presence to the contemporary Canadian arts scene.
