Turntable Technique: The Art of the DJ

I enjoyed this book despite the fact that it wasn't exactly what I had expected.
I enjoyed this book despite the fact that it wasn't exactly what I had expected.I was expecting something that would deal with all aspects of turntablism from beat-juggling to beat matching to scratching. However this book is entirely dedicated to scratching. If you have no interest in scratching, there is probably not much you will get from this book.If you are interested in scratching, then this may well be the book for you. Stephen Webber looks at scratching as being a percussion instrument similar to drums. To illustrate this point, he has written out sheet music for DJs including an attempt at scratching the William Tell Overture. It is an original approach and the addition of records in the book to scratch with are a nice touch.Overall, if you can read music somewhat and are really interested in mastering scratching, this may be the book for you. Guys who want to beat-match and juggle would be better off looking else where.

Great Info for beginners..
I have always wanted to DJ via turntables, but never found the opportunity to start and learn. I bought this dvd per the customer reviews and as a way new beginner at this, with no knowledge of the equipment specifics, this dvd was very helpful. I can't wait to buy my first DJ equipment and start practicing. I will definitely buy more instructional dvds from this guy in the future.

I was going to buy turntables from my roommate's girlfriend's brother, but then he broke up with her and i wrote a nasty story about her online and she found it so I didn't get to buy turntables, but then my girlfriend bought me turntables for my birthday. So I bought this DVD to learn how to do everything... it's pretty informational on set-up and the basics, but just boring as hell and slow. I couldn't even stand watching it... his samples are pretty boring too, running trumpet loops over techno beats... looping breaks, etc. This DVD would be good for learning basic techo blends. As I'm looking more towards spinning hip hop and scratching... i'd recommend DJ Qbert's Do It Yourself Scratching DVD. It's great.

Good for absolute beginners
The records and book are designed for absolute beginners to DJ'ing. If you don't know anything at all about turntables, this is the book set for you. Otherwise, just go ahead and buy normal battle records and watch battle videos.Personally, I was not new to DJ'ing, but started using turntables only recently. However, I grew out of this book and the included records pretty quickly, so it wasn't worth the money for me to buy this.
