A good start
Being the only book of its kind, it deserves credit for filling a need. That being said, it is far from perfect. I really enjoyed reading the studies about music education. Most of the studies profiled, however, are written by the author or his students. A little more variety of topic and style in the studies presented would help prevent some of this "academic incest." Music therapy majors, don't get too excited about having a book that mentions your field. Only two of the twenty or so studies cited are on music therapy. My final complaint is with the discussion questions at the end of each chapter. Most of the questions are simple recall and do not facilitate real learning or problem-solving. Plus, the question sections have a high concentration of spelling and grammatical errors. This is unacceptable for a book of the caliber this aspires to. Perhaps the author created mistakes on purpose to necessitate a second edition. If so, that is deplorable. Overall it was an enjoyable and educational book whose merits outweigh its faults.

Detailed book to help understand our growing knowledge.
This is a detailed book into research genres for music education and music therapy. Everything from Qualitative to Quantitative and the subgenres therein. Included with each description is an article that is considered an example of the research type. Music Research is needed today simply because it is so relatively new in academia. We've always believed that "music is art" and it has sway on cultures and individuals but that's it. Here we find a need to expand our knowledge into 'why', 'how' and 'what' music does what it does to students and society around.
