Works Well with Minor Modifications
The ATS eye shields are superior to the factory eye shields supplied with the Baldor 712 7" grinder; however there are a few needed modifications. The photographs show what is described.First, you must expand the hole to a 5/16" 18 (Coarse Thread) for the ATS included threaded rod to work. On the Baldor the only way to accomplish that is to remove the wheel covers and drill inward. The body prohibits the ability to drill from the other direction. A 1/4" drill bit and the 5/16" 18 tap make it an easy fix.Second, once you screw in the threaded rod to the proper depth, you will need to place a 5/16" lock washer next to the grinder and then the included nut (they say there is a lock nut, but it was a typical nut, not a locking nut. Then you have the rod sticking toward the body of the grinder. With the wheels off, it's easy to set the proper depth of the threaded rod so it doesn't rub the grinder wheel. Spin the wheel by hand to ensure you don't have contact between the threaded rod and grinder wheel. Then simply reinstall the wheel cover.Third, the threaded rod is a bit too long for the Baldor 712, but it's easy to cut off about 1/4" from the threaded rod so that the wing nut will spin on the threaded rod. After that, put it together as the instructions say. It's a higher quality part and feels substantial compared to the old factory original. Most people who order these eye shields have access to the simple tools and hardware associated with the modifications. The entire process, including modifications, took about 30 minutes. It's likely some other grinders may not require the modifications.

Check Size Prior to Ordering:
The Large size indicates that it is for Baldor 7" grinders, however it will not fit our Baldor Model 712 without either swapping the hardware for smaller or modifying a fairly costly grinder (instead, it makes more sense to use the correct size or modify the accessories/accouterments in my opinion, therefore we have opted to return for the Small sized model UGS-1 instead). The workmanship is excellent with nicely rounded edges on the polycarbonate shields and a nicely finished product, so the review is a solid 4 stars.
