Over the skies of Germany, toward the end of WWII in 1944, the first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft took flight, the Messerschmitt Me-262. The Messerschmitt Me-262A could go up to 560 mph, a hundred mph faster than the top speed of the Mustang, which topped out at 455 mph, but the P-51 had a significantly better turning radius allowing it to escape the enemies from their attack. Arguably, either plane could be considered better than the other and a continual debate through today. When pitted against each other in a dogfights, the pilots were the overall factor. Since the Messershmitt entered the war late and was more difficult to train pilots, the reliable P-51D Mustang continued with undeniable success throughout the war made it difficult to fully compare these two war marchines.
