hello, The lamp comes WITH its special bulb, which is rated at 9 watts. It is a special bulb because it changes color hue three times, as you press the "on" button! That is why you see the three different color hues shown above the picture of the lamp in the advert. I novel and lovely concept. But that does not answer the question! I would not try to use more than a 40 or 60 watt plain bulb, so that the "heat" does not harm the shade!
