Q: I need to know whether the flap is a completely separate part with a hinge, or whether the valve uses the rubber seal as a flexure in order to act as

it's a rubber flap. i installed two in the water feature i built and they are working very well so far.

Q: Can it be used vertically but with the flap opening downwards? I want the water to flow down, not up. The upward pressure, when present, will be high.

The Valterra 200-C15W can be used vertically, but the flow of water would need to go in the direction of the arrow. You may want to use the swing /spring check valve instead, which will be closed when no downward pressure is present.

Q: Can I use this on a condensate drain for a tankless water heater?

We think the Valterra 200-C15W valve is too large for a tankless water heater condensate drain line.

Q: Can this be used between a shower and an upflush pump system? Sometimes when the upflush pump starts a bit of water comes up through the shower drain.

The 200-C15W a one way check valve to prevent backflow. It is difficult to fully understand the application, but I would say it would work providing it is installed correctly.
