I had never played with any kind of sand like this before but I had purchased a box of 2 lbs for each of my kids for Christmas. Before Christmas someone had given my daughter the name brand kinetic sand in a very small kit as an early present, and all I could think was, oh dear God - what did I do? I could see the appeal but it was really messy and the few molds that came with the kit, the kinetic sand would get stuck in it and wasn't as workable as it looked on TV. After Christmas my kids ripped into their CoolSand, and I'm so relieved. It's what the kinetic sand should have been. Don't get me wrong, it's still messy. But my kids are messy, to be expected. But the clean up on the stuff is a lot easier, you can actually take a bit of sand to pick up other small bits of sand. It still has that fluid sort of feeling like kinetic sand, but it doesn't get stuck in the molds like the other one. And I had to play with it too to test it, I think it just feels more cool and more moldable, definitely more fun to play with. So pleased with it I just ordered another 2 pounds each kid- which was a tough call to make because I'm pretty poor right now and the stuff is pretty expensive, but the kids love it. Will keep them busy for hours, not to mention the sensory aspect since my daughter is also autistic, and I have to admit I kind of like to play with it too. I also purchased the molds for the sand in the same brand and it just really is the icing on the cake. I absolutely will not even bother trying another brand of play sand after my experience- I'm pretty certain this stuff is probably the best.

This was an "Oh, it got great reviews and it's cheaper than the original, so why not?" moment. It's okay to play with--feels like cookie dough--but it doesn't stick to itself as well as the original, it comes apart and gets all over the table and floor unlike the original, and is harder to clean up because it doesn't stick to itself. So after one use I ended up throwing away probably 1/4 cup. At that rate, it won't last very long around here. So back to the original for us.

So listen: My little buddy is super into this stuff! I did some research and people RAVE about this brand! But I was vexed a bit, because they either sell you a tiny portion for 10 bucks or sell ya an INSANE amount for a high price. Anywho, I got both of the brands: the BIG, GIANT, COOL, top of the line original “KINETIC SAND” (WITH toys & accessories includes) and this wee little ten buck bag of CoolSand for the heck of it. I gave it to the kid for Christmas. He unwrapped the big Kinetic Sand brand and he was stoked!! He unwrapped this glorified ziploc full of neon green CoolSand and looked at it kind of oddly. He’s a grateful kid, but kids are honest and can’t hide how they feel lol. And it truly is just a .. kind of.. glorified bag of color. No exciting packaging. So his face was sort of like.. “ehhh what’s this?”We opened both. The ENTIRE FAMILY got into it! All of us adults, one kid and a baby who just wanted to eat it all. And the verdict: We ALL LOVVVVED THE COOLSAND! I asked my little buddy how he liked them, he hated the Kinetic Sand brand and loves the CoolSand. He says the kinetic sand smells weird and feels sticky. I agree. So get this one. Your kids may look at it with disdain initially, but they’ll love it.

I’ve purchased this sand in purple — which TSA confiscated despite the fact that 1) all of their tests showed that it was fine, 2) I had double-checked the list of no-fly substances, and kinetic sand was listed as allowed, and 3) I had taken it through my first flight, where the agent checked it for about five minutes before letting me go.Anyway, I liked it enough that I decided it was worth replacing. The purple was sold out, so I got blue. I just opened the blue package today, and the sand seems stiffer than the purple did, but I’m sure the humidity of southern summers will remedy that problem quickly. I put about a third of the package in a small container and leave it at work — I have trichotillomania, and it helps me not to pull my hair as much if I can keep my non-mouse-clicking hand engaged.One more thing: I showed mine to one of my friends who bites his nails, and he was so mesmerized that I ended up telling him to keep it. If you only intend to use a about a handful, you can keep this in multiple places and/or share with others who may enjoy it.
