Q: What are the demensions of the face plate? It looks square but the demensions provided indicate otherwise

It is square. The Widest point is 11 1/2" x 11 1/2"

Q: what size duct pipe does this fit?

Note that in order to fit the smaller ducts you must have room to insert the entire unit, including the larger duct adapters, into the ceiling. This precludes use with finished space above the ceiling if you are using a small duct, or usage where there is an elbow venting out horizontally.

Q: Can diffuser be screwed directly to ceiling?

There are four screws on the surface, that when turned move four latches on the bottom securing the diffuser to the ceiling. You need to make sure that the opening has to be the right size to fit the diffuser properly and the supply duct is the right size.

Q: I take it the knob I see is to adjust the airflow I'm assuming it can be completely closed ?

completely closes with rubber seal.
