Structured Learning!
So, like so many I decided to take the lockdown as a opportunity to learn something I’d put off for years and that was learning the guitar. Firstly, some caveats, whilst not professional, I’ve been playing music to a good standard for nearly 50 years (Blimey i gulped then!) so I don’t want to mislead, secondly I’m pretty driven so I make the time. Before starting this book, I had put some hours into the basics which toughened my fingers and strengthened my hands. But what has so far made this book priceless is it’s provided me with a structure. It is so easy to try and learn chords etc, get bored and lose interest. I think if you spend a good proportion of your practice time working through the (what seems easy!) exercises WITH A METRONOME OR THE MUSIC you’ll a) enjoy it and b) start seeing some progress, whilst also grounding your playing in some routine, but important theory and practice - I’ll never be great, but I love it and in time I think I’ll be averagely competent.... remember there’s only so much YouTube can take you ... some of the routine is vital and has to be invested into! - Enjoy 😊

Great book for learning guitar by progress.
I had lessons some 40 years ago and gave it up. As i have a nice collection of guitars and lockdown i decided to learn guitar. After a couple of books i found Method 1 book. This gives a very good insight into all aspects of guitar playing, starting with learning basic music reading and learning string by string with simple tunes to play on assigned strings. I have found this the best way to learn and have since purchase this Complete Version Method book which gives all 3 books under one cover. Have now played the entire book over several times and getting slightly better all the time and finding more to apply each time i have learned to sight read to a basic standard, learned the fret board and many scales, chords, methods and structures. I can only think that the people that have marked this book down are not prepared to put the work in and start from the very basic string by string while learning to read music etc. Learning any musical instrument takes effort, time and dedication, it does not come easy. Put in the required effort and you will be rewarded by the pleasure you get from achieving. If you think there is a easy way to learn to play the guitar, sell or give it away. This book was a revelation to me, but only once a decided to work at it!

Eric Clapton in the making...
Bought this for my 14 year old son who wants to be the next Eric Clapton and Hank Marvin combined....In short, it's great: well worth the money and starts - to my surprise - teaching individual notes rather than chords. I'd argue that this approach leads to a better, fuller, understanding of music.Different styles are included, helpfully: everything from Rock to Spanish Classical and everything in between. I'm hopeful we may end up more with 'Dougie MacLean' than 'Van Halen' ...

Great for beginners
I actually really like this book, which is refreshing as most books aimed at beginners seem to miss the mark. They often start with extremely simple things, explaining in great detail things that most five year olds could easily grasp, before leaping straight into extremely technical or complicated things with no explanation at all.I do think this book works better as a supplement to lessons, but would probably still work for anyone teaching themselves.

Don't waste your time with this
I really don't understand what the point of this book is. It's not clear how to use it and it doesn't really teach much about the guitar. It is filled with musical notation of simple melodies (not guitar specific at all) which are very old fashioned (think ode to joy) and would likely be so boring for any beginner that they would give up on guitar.I'm at a loss as to why this has received good reviews on Amazon. It's really not good at all!
