How big are the ear pieces? Are they comparable to the UR-20?

Comparable to the UR'20s, yes.  As good?  I don't think so. These are full-sized headphones for people who aren't knocked out by Koss' famous, most successful Porta-Pro headphones.  The UR-20's are kind of a "compromise" between the compact Porta-Pros and the UR-40s.  I've used the UR-40 at the radio station (NPR outlet) and find they "wear better" for a 2-hour show than Sony phones costing over $100.  The UR-40's, moreover, are going for $8 less than I paid for them in 2008 when I ordered my pair from Amazon.  At their current price, I'd have trouble justifying saving the few bucks for the UR20s.  They're comfortable and light-weight with audio quality that's full, smooth, and "natural."  As for blocking outside sound, I envy people who can go into an inviolable cocoon for that amount of time.  I've got to hear telephones ringing, adults and children calling, and orders from the boss.  Phones that block out all noise are for young kids with no responsibilities and with the luxury of simply "tuning out."

From the plug to the actual headphones its 4 feet. From the plug to the base of where the cord splits to go to each headphone its about 3 feet.

Is it easy for people sitting near me (for example on a train or bus) to hear the music im playing, if i play it loudly, with these headphones?

These headphones by design do not have good isolation, meaning other people CAN hear the sound very easily (compared to most headphones) and you can hear outside sound easily as well.

If you are in a quiet office setting, it will be as if you are playing the sound out loud. If you are on an airplane, they will do little to nothing to block incoming sound.

HOWEVER, they were not designed to do that, and they are, without a doubt, the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn. They do not press in at all on your ears, are comfortable on the top of your head, and won't overheat you. So if you are looking for a comfortable pair to wear all day and don't care about sound bleeding in or out, these are amazing. They won't make it on any comfort lists as they are really below the price point that gets on review lists, but the sound quality is more than adequate for $35 headphones and I have never found a more comfortable pair even going up into the $600 range.
