Q: The title and details say 58.5" tall, but it's also listed as 39" tall up near the top. Which is it?

I contacted the manufacturer because I had the same question. They have fixed the description and they told me the title was correct--it is indeed 58.5" tall. :)

Q: does this have to be attached to an existing fence or could it be attached to a couple poles planted in the ground?

Technically it could be attached to the poles but would be very flimsy and wrinkly... an existing fence is best.

Q: Can it stand on its own? What provisions are made for stand on its own installation if any

No, needs to be tied to fence or similar

Q: Can this be cut to fit gates as well as fence?

It has a plastic mesh "spine" so while it can be cut to fit a gate, you'd need to be creative and handy. You may have to "finish" the edges so you don't lose all of the greenery off the plastic mesh spine. It definitely can be done and looks really good.
