The Oxford Handbook of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (Oxford Library of Psychology)

Loved it
Must read for DBT therapists. It is a whopping 1,056 pages. This elephant has to go down slowly, 1 bite at a time. I took notes in pencil in the margins, I wrote notes in a notebook for specific clients or consultation team. Some of the stuff I retyped for consultation team.Linehan's 1993 DBT text book and the 2nd edition training manuals (released late 2014, pub date 2015) go so far. The Oxford Handbook documents research that has been done in the past 30 years for DBT and each chapter is by a leader in the field. It is worth the hefty price tag. (I got an Amazon credit card, got the book for about half price, paid it off, cancelled the card.)If you started doing DBT before say... 2012, 2013 your training may be out of date unless you have been reading literature and participating in other Behavioral Tech trainings. If you have had difficulty in passing the test or case conceptualization portion of Behavioral Tech certification, this book may be worth the cost. (It is certainly less than paying for a consultant or taking an expensive class.) Shari Manning has you covered, chapter 12. Are you still teaching biosocial theory from the 1993 text or the 2nd edition training manual? Chapter 2 has all of the neuroimaging science and info on brain development--really makes a difference. This feeds right into subsequent chapters 3, 4, and 6. Get in depth with what invalidating environments are, looking at suicidal behaviors and self harm, and more about emotion dysregulation. If I go through more the review will be too long.I have always said if Michaela Swales publishes an article-- we should read it. She was the editor of this tome. All your favorites and DBT heros are published here. Guilford Press' practice series is very good with the what-to-do now. I love reading research and that's what this is PLUS specialities that you may have had some difficulty locating. There is a chapter for private practice, for college settings, for working with cognitively challenged clients, eating disorders, adolescents, in schools, how to train internationally. Where else can you get this stuff?Literally, I spent about 2 months getting through this with at least 2 hours a day. If you are a DBT therapist it is worth your time and it is worth it for your clients and their families. We are changing the world, one client at a time and they are changing us.Thank you Marsha for your gift to us. Thank you Michaela for putting this together. Thank you for all of the researchers, the chapter authors, and for all of the therapists, clients, families, supportive networks (like NEA BPD). 10,000 gold stars for all of us who show up every day and do this work. It was very validating to have the knowledge available and shared with me.

Amazing Resource
I found this to be an invaluable resource on DBT. It added so much recent research and developments within the world of DBT. Chapters are stand alone and the book doesn't need to be read in order. The fact that each chapter was written by a different author added fresg perspectives and diversity of views to the classic dbt primary sources.

It didn't work
I was excited about getting it because it's been very hot where I live. It didn't work.
