Riccardo Chailly was born in Milan as a member of a musical family. He studied at the conservatories of Perugia, Rome and Milan and completed master classes with Franco Ferrara in Siena. At the age of 20 he became assistant to Claudio Abbado at La Scala in Milan. He made his debut as an opera conductor there in 1978 and was soon in great demand at the largest international venues. Highlights of his recent seasons as Gewandhaus Kapellmeister include the major International Mahler Festival in Leipzig (as host and participant) as well as tours throughout Europe, the USA, China, Japan and South Korea; in addition to performances at the festivals in Salzburg, Lucerne, Helsinki and Grafenegg, at the Beethoven Festival In 2013 and 2014, Chailly also works with the Filarmonica della Scala, the Vienna and the Berlin Philharmonics and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Riccardo Chailly has been an exclusive Decca artist for over 30 years. His recordings, whose repertoire extends from Bach to the great classical symphonic works and operas to contemporary music, received many awards.
