HIDE AND SEEK: A Criminal Profiler Novel by Mary Burton - 3.5 Stars
HIDE AND SEEK was a preorder for me and one that I was really looking forward to. It takes place five months after "Cut and Run" which is Macy's sisters story and where her character is first introduced. And while I really thought I would love Macy, and I did like her, that's about as far as my emotions went where she was concerned. I just think she was too aloof which for me is not an endearing trait. Nevada on the other hand I thought was wonderful. His openness and ability to face his feelings for Macy felt genuine, and I only wish she had been more receptive. Instead their relationship is left up for grabs at the end, which didn't sit well with me. What little romance there actually was comes late in the story and included a couple of sex scenes. However, all that took a definite back seat to the mystery and suspense which was where the real focus lay.The plot revolves around Macy and Nevada hunting a killer who stalks, rapes, and then strangles his victims. As a woman this was often hard for me to stomach, and I don't think this book would be appropriate for anyone who has ever been violated. There are graphic details about the assaults of these young ladies too, most of whom were just teens at the time. But even though the subject matter wasn't ideal, I was still able to immerse myself in Burton's storytelling. There didn't seem to be a lot of surprises or twists and turns though and the handful I suppose were meant to be that way I usually had figured out. Even the killer didn't come as a surprise since I suspected it was one of two people. In the end I thought the book was slightly better than okay, but barely. Maybe my expectations were too high but for some reason I wasn't entirely satisfied.Pages & Kindle Locations: The story itself contained 337 pages & ended at location 5046 on my kindle device.

Fantastic - Love Macy!
Burton is one of my go-to authors for great romantic suspense/thriller reads. The stories are always engaging with down-to-earth likeable characters and strong storylines full of mystery, suspense and sprinkles of romance; along with connections to previous books – like this one. This is a compelling read you will not want to put down until you are through.I loved Macy’s character; she was strong, resilient, determined, kind-hearted and dedicated to her job. I really enjoyed her working with Sheriff Nevada and their interaction throughout the story. There were plenty of tense, suspenseful moments as well as action, some light-hearted moments, and romance. I liked how Macy and Nevada were able to compartmentalize their work and personal relationships, with neither overshadowing the main plot of the book. I also enjoyed Deputy Brooke Bennett’s character and think it would be awesome if she had her own book. It seems like there is more than meets the eye with her and she would have an interesting story to tell.*Many thanks to the publisher for the advanced copy of this read I received thru NetGalley.

Recommend!
Mary Burton is an auto-buy author for me. She's a master of thrilling romantic suspense, her heroes and heroines are always smart and strong. FBI agent Macy Crow, fresh off a near death experience in Cut and Run is back. She is recovering from a devastating hit and run and is sent to Deep Run Virginia when the body of a teenager missing for 15 years is found. Mike Nevada is a former Special Agent who has worked with Macy in the past and the two also had a personal relationship. He is now the Sheriff of Deep Run and requests her help when this case appears to be connected to a series of rapes and disappearances. Macy and Nevada reconnect romantically, but what I like is Mary doesn't shove their relationship in our face. It develops naturally. The emphasis of the book is on the suspense and we are taken on an exciting thrill ride. You may think you know who the bad guy is....but think again! This story kept me completely engaged until the satisfying conclusion. Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hiding in plain sight
FIB agent Macy Crow is hoping she can crack an old case and win a spot on an elite FIB team. Reunited with her one-time lover, Mike Nevada, a former agent turned small town sheriff, Crow is still struggling to move past her own close call with death. Crow and Nevada rekindle their personal relationship while racing against a deadline to solve a cold case murder and string of rapes while dealing with a missing person who may help tie it all together. A long-standing cover-up by locals, women struggling for years to bury the rapes which changed their lives, and a deputy becoming increasingly convinced that she must use any means possible to satisfy her own doubts about the rapes and murder converge in a race against time to shut down a serial criminal or die trying.

Not the Best! Ugh!
Superficially, this is an okay book, but it clearly lacks the quality of Mary Burton's other books. Fortunately, the ending saved it from being a total dud. There's lots of action and many surprises, but the characters were flat and mostly unlikable. Too many subplots clouded the storyline with too many details making it harder to keep reading. It almost felt as if Mary Burton didn't really like writing this one.The core of the story starts well but then gets lost. If you're a Burton lover, these problems might be forgivable and overlooked. However, this book didn't motivate me to continue the series. Sadly, there was no real depth or added value. My biggest challenges came from the level of detail over trivial and unimportant things for most of the book, and then how much magically gets solved or tidied up in the last two chapters, like Burton gave up trying and just wanted to get finished. Even the love scenes were bland compared to previous novels.Wanted to like it, but found it lacking. Perhaps the author deserves a Mulligan on this one. I'm hoping Burton's future works don't follow the same basic story and structure. Almost felt I'd already read it several time before---caught in a perpetual "Groundhog Day" experience. The Audible narration was well done and appreciated, highlighting some of the book's better parts.

Gripping murder mystery
A gripping story, sensitively written and creates the suspense well. Macey has her quirks but is very likeable and satisfying conclusion.

Enjoyed
A well crafted 'who dunnit' which keeps you guessing to the end. Small town fraternities keeping mum about events which should have been reported. Solid main characters, who follow on from previous novels. Enjoyed.
