you get what you pay for
This is a great pen. Sometimes display images can be misleading. For example, when you see a picture of a big-mac, it looks like a mouth-watering masterpiece of edible design. However, when you order a bigmac at McD's, you're presented with a smashed, sickly, stale looking burger that looks about 5% as appealing as the picture. This is not true with the Jinhao pen. The pen you receive will be just as gorgeous as the pen in the pictures. The nib especially is a work of art. It's meticulously designed and crafted with an 18k gold plating. I was under the impression that the pen would have a corrugated textured feel to it, as the outside shows a bumpy, braided texture. However, the entire pen is coated with a lacquer and is in-fact completely smooth all the way up and down the length. Holding this pen makes me want to write.PROS:-very heavy feel. I'm a big guy, and I like to have something with some heft to wrap my big hands around. This isnt a flimsy bic-beautiful look-smooth, consistent ink flow-comfortable grip-great craftsmanship (for the price.)-good write-ability-if you pull this thing out to sign a document or something, people are going to think, "whoa, this guy means business."CONS:-the appearance, especially the ruby red dragon's eyes on the clip can be slightly cheezy/tacky/gawdy-to an extent, the pen looks blingy, rather than classy-it can be distractingNON-PEN RELATED ISSUES:-didn't come with ink or a cartridge-shipping took 2 weeks (which is actually about 3 weeks less than the predicted shipping time)-the nice wood-colored display case shown in the pictures did NOT come with the pen. it came with a super-cheap, definitely not presentable blue cardboard, foam-lined container(garbage.)

Nice pen for the price point
This pen is a lovely sturdy looking pen. When observing it online the design appears like it may be rough and uncomfortable, but it is actually very smooth. The pen as a whole is a bit heavy, and according to my scale is almost 2 ounces. Most of the weight however is surprisingly in the cap and without capping the pen feels nice in your hand. The line point appears medium/bold.Things to be aware of:This pen does not come with any instructions, something I really liked having with my Pilot metropolitan. So if you are new to fountain pens you'll need to check here with other buyers or search on the Internet for care instructions.Initially I considered giving this pen 3 stars because when writing it was skipping. It does take a little bit to get good ink flow. I am using the Jinhao international cartridges and you can't give them a little squeeze to get the ink flow because they are very stiff. I found that slowing my writing pace down helped get the ink to flow better and then I was able to write at my normal pace. It does come with a converter, so using bottled ink and other brands could influence your inkflow experience as some inks are thicker/thinner than others.I don't recall reading in the description if it the pen was identified as a pull cap or screw cap, but it is a pull cap. I initially had some difficulty pulling the cap off, but it just takes more force to pull than what I am used to. When replacing the cap you'll hear a nice solid click. Capping on the end of your pen isn't quite as secure, but you can push the cap down far enough it will hold on to the pen and not fly off.Edit* I recently tried noodlers bullet proof ink with this pen and I have noticed that the ink flow is much better than using the Jinhao cartridge with this pen. So I stand by the statement that using different inks could improve inkflow.

Great pen especially for the money
I'm a hard core fountain pen user. I carry disposable fountain pens in my purse so I won't be heartbroken if I lose one. I have several Waterman Phineas pens that just stay in their boxes because it's always a battle to get the ink to start flowing. My favorite 2 pens are a vintage and a modern Mont Blanc. They are the baseline against which I compare all fountain pens. When my pen arrived, my first pleasant surprise was that it got here on Sept. 23 when the estimated delivery date was Oct. 21 - Nov. 6. The next pleasant surprise was that the pen came in an attractive black velveteen sleeve, which will protect it nicely in my purse. The third pleasant surprise is that it has a nice weight and balance to it and it is very comfortable to write with. Additional things I like about this pen: it has a golden scale pattern all over the barrel and cap that has been sealed with some kind of high gloss polymer to protect the design; the piston-fill cartridge works flawlessly; I uncap the pen and it immediately lays down a line of ink--I don't have to shake it or fiddle with it to get it to flow; it has a medium width nib that writes very smoothly and effortlessly. Those last two features it has in common with the very expensive Mont Blanc pens and I don't have to be afraid someone will steal it. It just wasn't expensive enough for me to worry about loosing it. And I like the looks of it. Funky/cool.
