Fixed my "bogus" E39 tail light warning
This solved a problem that had been bugging me for ages. My BMW 530i (E39, model year 2002) had a dashboard warning showing the right rear tail light out. But I checked numerout times: that tail light wasn't out, and neither was the right brake light. I tweaked wires. I cleaned connections. I considered buying a lighting module. Finally I learned that when the E39's dashboard was designed back in the late 1990s, center brake lights hadn't yet been mandated in Germany. So when they added the third light to the car, they just told the lighting module to deliver its warnings to the right rear light indicator. Fast forward to 2015: MY CENTER BRAKE LIGHT HAS BEEN OUT FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS. I never noticed. Nobody told me. I never got pulled over. When I went to check the bulb by pulling the socket out from its little housing through the trunk, I found the bulb fully frozen and corroded to the socket. Not sure how that happened, but a visit to Amazon and a little over $20 got me a new socket and a pair of new bulbs. Problem solved; I'm legal again, and I don't have to look at that warning light anymore.Moral of the story: if your dashboard says you have a light out, you probably do. But it might not be where it says it is.

I used this socket holder to repair the center brake ...
I used this socket holder to repair the center brake light on a 2002 BMW 530i (E39). It appeared to be identical to the original socket. I first tried replacing the bulb, but that didn't work. There was evidence of some overheating on the original socket, although it wasn't entirely clear that it was melted to the point of breaking the electrical connection. In any case, replacing the socket solved the problem.

Real BMW Part
Real OE Part with molded BMW logo and nomenclature. Looks and feels genuine.Works perfectly in my E39 using called for P21W lamp. Original socket had partially melted. This one appears to be a different plastic. No more high-mount brake light failure warning (shows up as right rear on indicator panel).

Worked well, for a while
Got about 7 months out of this socket before the "check brake lights" warning started coming back on. Not sure why BMW thought this was a good design 'cause I've now had to replace the socket 3 times in 4 years of owning this car. So it does work, but I was hoping to get more than 7 months out of it.

Worked with a little tweak
Fit is good, but the bottom contact was bent weird and was making contact or arcing. I was able to bend it further away from the side contact and now it works fine.

Worked perfect in my 2003 530i
I was getting a check brake light even when all my lights were working. I took the 3rd brake light socket out to replace the bulb but for the life of me I could not pull the old bulb out. The plastic on the old socket seemed to have melted a bit which was a bit disconcerting. The new socket fit perfectly and after a new bulb was installed the error cleared.
