Exactly what I wanted!
Short stories filled with wit and such legendary things. I read this during bed time and have interesting stories to tell others on occasions. The whole series is great.

Great variety of folktales.
It presents such a great collection, that I don't feel bad if I don't connect with some of the tales, because I know I'll become engaged with others.

Good for older kids
A collection of unique stories. Some are great read aloud for kids' bedtime, some are strangely wordy. It seems to depend on which original language each story was translated from.

Well done, Ms. Yolen. Well done.
This is one of those books that I keep buying and giving away a copy. Each of the stories tells you where it is from, and Jane Yolen, children's author, made sure to pick out stories that were a little off the beaten track but still have similar themes to the fairy tales that you grew up with. The writing style changes to reflect the region and it has a logical method of progression through the book of short stories. It covers mythology that is pretty core to the cultures.I love this book, I cannot say it enough. Well done, Ms. Yolen. Well done.

I adored it.
I teach elementary school, and I originally got this book because I was instructing other teachers on how to incorporate multicultural folklore into their classrooms. However, this book ended up spending most of its time by my bedside. It is SO GOOD. I came across it by accident, but I totally love it, just as much as I love my anthology of original Grimm's fairy tales. If you have any interest in the nuances of folktales, and if you love looking for similarities between cultures, start here. It's amazing.

Huge variety.
Just got it and was able to capture my 4.5 yr old’s attention while reading a couple of the stories out loud.Probably 150+ stories from all different regions. Some of the stories are 10? pages, some are 1 page. I think it is ideal for an inattentive child’s bedtime story.

and I think they will continue to enjoy them beyond (as I enjoy reading them still
An amazingly diverse set of folk tales from around the world, some make you laugh, some make you think, some both. Our kids have been enjoying them from ages 3-11, and I think they will continue to enjoy them beyond (as I enjoy reading them still!)

No care for product
I'm sure the book in time will have creases and dings but this book looks used right out of the gate. As for the book content, I'm really pleased with the purchase and enjoying the stories. I just wish there was better care for the product.

If you only ever buy one book of stories...
(which you shouldn't) make it this one. This is a kind of 'greatest hits' collection from the rest of Pantheon's superb folktales library, deftly curated and brought together by Jane Yolen. Hundreds of stories across a number of themes, many familiar, others much less well-known.An absolute must-have for anyone who loves stories.

Dated storytelling with a modern price
The story's haven't aged well and are quite dated and hard to read. The modern cover really doesn't suit the content. There are better collections out there.
