Q: How does it work on picking up sand and not scattering it around?

Never used it on sand, but worked great for cat litter and hair. Works very well for kitchen crumbs and I even use it in the family room on low carpet. Doesn't spread anything around. Litter stays in the collector unti you empty it.

Q: where does the charging cord plug in?

Charger's AC plug into receptacle (one usually on the wall), and the other DC end to the back side of the sweeper. When properly connected red light comes on. Manual says this red light does not go off when fully charged. This is unusual.

Q: had three machines, why does the red light go out minutes after plugging it in, it is fully ran down

My red light stays on. There is no indication when it is fully charged.
