Product description Best Garage Anthems Ever .co.uk The Best Garage Anthems Ever title excludes this compilation from being up to date, one of dance music's sacred rules. With that out of the way this does certainly contain many of the genre's classics, however anyone who's spent any time on the garage/2-step scene will have heard many of these tracks too many times to remember. This is a great beginner's album but an aficionado's bore. What this album also does is show off the song-writing craft of UK garage, often far superior to that of UK R&B that slavishly follows its American ringmaster. Amira's "My Desire", Ramsey and Fen's "Love Bug" and the various Artful Dodger contributions all possess a snappy, scripted emotional sensibility drawn straight from the UK experience. Anyone wondering where British soul resides need only look here. Wookie's retouch of Soul II Soul's "What's Going On" is perhaps the best evidence of this (though surprisingly Wookie's own classic "Battle" is omitted). However garage is as much about the pure sensuality and power of its delicate beats and ground-shifting basslines, something tracks such as Zed Bias' "Neighbourhood" and the chart hit "Bound 4 the Reload" adequately provide. Purists will rightly balk at the inclusion of the Posh Spice enhanced "Out of Your Mind" by True Steppers and Another Level's contribution but if your lifestyle doesn't revolve around pirate radio stations, DKNY, Twice As Nice and Moet Champagne, and garage is just good-time get-down music then this one is for you. --Jake Barnes
