I'm not real big on stitch dictionaries, I have several and guess what, they mostly sit on the shelf.This one will be used a lot. If you are a new knitter, you will not regret investing in the book. It will teach you new stitches and inspire you to design on your own because all the converting is done for you. And if your are an experienced knitter, you will appreciate the work done because it's going to make your life simpler for the same reasons I just mentioned.Let me explain. First, this book is a hard cover spiral bound book. Totally awesome, as the pages will lay flat.The photos are great, large enough to see and appreciate. Granted there are a few color choices I would change in the color work section, but only a few.And speaking of sections, this book is divided into sections. This is great, makes what I'm looking for that much simpler. The sections include:Intro.How To Use the Patterns.Knits And PurlsRibsTextured, Slipped, and FancyYarnovers And EyeletsCablesLaceColorworkHems and EdgingsProjectsAppendixNot only do you get 157 different stich pattern instructions but you get them Flat bottom up, Flat top down and in the round. You get them written out as well as graphed.And there is a pattern at the end of each section to make, for practicing your new stitches in that section. Wow! I didn't expect that. I've got the sweater and cowl pegged already.Wendy Bernard thoughtfully considered everything that a knitter desires and put them all under one cover and did it well.I'll be recommending to each of my students to invest in this book. A good stitch dictionary not only teaches, it inspires and encourages you to break out of your shell and try new things, and this book gives you plenty of inspiration. It is one book that no matter what you enjoy knitting, be it sweaters, socks, scarves or hats, that you will go to again and again. If this book comes out in a kindle version as well, I'll be investing in that too so that I will not only have a hard copy for the house but a digital copy to carry with me. How about it Wendy? I have a fairly substantial library of books dedicated to both needlework and sewing, but the most well-done of all my books is this book: Up, Down, All-Around . . . It simply does all the things that need to be done RIGHT.In order to make clear what I'm saying, I'll give some specific examples. There are many, many stitch dictionaries, and the majority of them do offer pictures of the finished stitches. It is, however, astonishing to me how many of the pictures in these other dictionaries are stitched using very, very DARK yarn. Why on earth do people not realize that stitchwork--more so perhaps than any other type of craft--must have examples that are in light-enough colors so that people can actually discern each individual stitch? When the yarn for a stitched sample is done in such a dark color that you cannot see the stitches, the sample is completely useless. Although there are a few samples done in dark colors, the overwhelming majority are done in nice, light, colors, and are therefore quite easy to see.Add to that the spiral binding (always a wonderful asset to any book being used as a guide!), and the list of other outstanding features is just amazing. I don't believe I have EVER seen a knitting book that showed, on every single page, the directions for how each stitch is done (1) on a chart, (2) written out, (3) knitted flat, and also (4) how to knit it in the round! Such a versatile range of directions is more useful than I have ever encountered for any type of craft.

I love knitting, and create hundreds of projects a year for both business and personal uses. Though I consider myself an expert knitter, I have always fumbled when it comes to stitch patterns and knitting direction not agreeing. What's been the most frustrating is trying endlessly to get flat patterns to knit up well in-the-round, and visa versa. I cannot express how priceless this book is! It really is a must-have-- and at Amazon's $18.00 price tag, it's worth every penny (cover price on actual book is $29.95!) For each stitch pattern, there is a beautiful swatch photo in full color, with easy-to-follow instructions for knitting top-down, bottom-up, back and forth, and in-the-round. There are also a dozen or so projects, all of which are really cute and utilize techniques that could have broad future applications. There's a handy info-guide in the beginning that helps with chart reading and also a huge index of knitting abbreviations (which is useful for this book and for knitting from any other pattern!) I didn't expect the bonus chapter on edges and hems, and I was really excited to see extensive and elaborate chapters on lace and colorwork. I can see where another reviewer is coming from, wishing there was a kindle or online edition, as it is a little more convenient. But, I'm 24 and what I love most about knitting is putting the technology away for a while, and looking at and appreciating a book instead of a screen. I am so happy with this book, and I really think you will be too! Great for you, for a gift, or for sharing!

This book does a great job with patterns knitted from the bottom up, top down, or in the round. It offers both charts and written patterns. It is very well organized with a project on each section to play with a new pattern.The one thing I felt was missing was a good and bad place to use each pattern. In the opening for each section it would say something like some patterns stretch well while others like this pattern on this page do not. But I’d like to see under that pattern something like: great for these applications, but not great for those...On the kindle and on all my kindle devices including my phone & laptop the swatches were hard to see. I wish those pictures were bigger.I have many patterns bookmarked to incorporate into my next several projects.

What a great book! I knit exclusively with circular needles and mainly top-down patterns (I design my own, mostly) so this book is an absolute godsend! It saves me a lot of time in working out how to convert stitch patterns for every permutation of garment design, and the ring binder format is excellent for working with; no more floppy pages and losing your place! I hope that Wendy Bernard will release another edition with more stitch patterns, but this has definitely become my go-to stitch dictionary. More, please!
