Inspirational w/o Being Preachy
We chose this for family movie night. I was expecting a typical rising crescendo with a grand victory a la "Remember the Titains" or "Coach Carter", while their is the excitement of the games, that is just the icing, not the cake. The cake is about a coach living the things he teaches, that the effort is the thing, mistakes will be made, failures will come, but it is the effort we put in our work, family, lives that makes it all worth while. The story starts as a 151 game winning streak comes to a close, How does a team, a coach, a school, bounce back when they lose their feeling of invincibility. There is some religion in this, as the school is a Catholic All boys High School, and Bob Ladouceur (coach) is a man of faith. It his belief that football is a way to teach boys to be men. That they may not always have perfect games, but they should always give perfect effort. As the coach tries to rebuild his teams spirits, they are faced with set backs. It is how they face these that make the story so inspirational. As I do with all "inspired by" movies, I went on the net to see how close the movie was to the real life story. I was surprised to found that most of it is true. While a couple of the characters are actually compilations of several real people, and a few of the actions took place either before or after the 2004 season, most of the story is true to life.To see a man live up to his teachings, to see young boys become honorable men because of his teaching/coaching; made of a nice movie night.I recommend this movie.

Not what I expected (When the Game Stands Tall).
Not what I expected. We bought this DVD as Recommended by Amazon as we bought "Facing the Giants". True both are American High School 'Football' but there is very little Christian message in this one and it's very hard to follow - both the speech and the tactics. This film is very much about the game whereas "Facing the Giants" has a strong relationships side story.

Interesting story..
Interesting story and how he did it and the establishment (other high schools) didn't think things were fair. Come on it's America and it's the same for anyone; you'd want to go too the best school for your field of interest

Excellent!
Very enjoyable film, whether your into American sports or not. I found it inspirational and moving. James Caveizel great in the role, as always and the younger cast excellent as well. Highly recommended!
