The double mat is pretty easy to separate, if you do it carefully with a sharp knife. Be careful not to bend the larger mat. The opening of the large mat only is 5x5", with the double mat it is 4.5x4.5". Good luck!

I've been using these, in various sizes, as an inexpensive substitute for shadow boxes, for 3D cards that I like to frame. by buying the frame in a slightly larger size (they have double mats) and using the second mat, it creates enough space for the raised decorations on the cards. By now, I have half a dozen, which coordinate nicely on a table top or in a grouping on the wall. The look is crisp and modern, and the material is sturdy. I might not give them as gifts, but they look fine in my home.

The tabs on the back that hold the picture in are cheap and flimsy, unlike the rest of the frame. The other components are made well, and look nice.

This frame was perfect for my pebble art / gifts. It has plenty of room between the glass for any raised art, pic or project. Extremely giftable, excellent sturdiness (even with rocks in it), and great value for money. Will most definitely recommend and be buying again.

I got this so I could put a beautiful card I found that had the quilling art style (curled paper art) to give to a friend as a gift. It turned out great due to the depth inside the frame. Frame is nicely made too. I wouldn't give someone a crappy frame.
