Product description ------------------- What is Panax ginseng? Panax ginseng (English name - Asiatic ginseng) also occurs under the names of Chinese ginseng and ginseng. The name Panax derives from the Latin „Panaceum” i.e. an agent for all ailments. The Polish name (ginseng) comes from the phonetic transcription of the Chinese term for this plant “root-man”. The first European morphological description of ginseng and information about its recommended use appeared in the 17th century thanks to the Polish missionary – Jesuit Michał Boym in the work “Rerum Sinensium Compendiosa Descriptio”. Panax ginseng in the natural state occurs in Korea, the north-eastern part of China and in areas of eastern Russia. Currently, it is mainly obtained from multiannual crops. Allied plants are Panax japonicum and Panax quinquefolium (originating from North America). Panax ginseng is a perennial growing up to 70 cm (long) with a thick light beige or gray root, which has a human shape. The main root is up to 20 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter. The stem is usually single, and in the top – it creates a five-leaf whorl. Leaves are composed of 5-7 ovoid-lance-shaped leaflets with teeth on edges. The fruit is a drupe – usually, it contains two seeds. Chemical composition, action and use of the raw material: The root is a medical raw material. The most valuable component is saponins glycosides –called ginsenosides. Their concentration should be 1.6-3.8%. These compounds have a unique chemical structure and they were isolated in 1962. It is recommended to use 2 g of root per day for 2-3 months, after which a monthly break should be made.
