Q: Someone wrote that these only work for 1000Mbps;you would think that they would autoneg. 10/100/etc w/ the switch. Can someone else confirm?

I contacted TP-Link to ask them this question. Version 4 of the product supports 10/100/1000 auto-negotiation. Version 3 and older only supports gigabit.

Q: will this give me better speed? i have 100ft cat6 away from modem and only get 14mb down but 80 when connected closer

Yes and better stability. Switch your cable to cat 7 for better speed. If your willing to spend the money, get a 3ft cat7 cable connect that cable from modem to this converter, get a FO cable for 100 ft run ( they are about $40 to $50 on eBay) connect the cable to a second converter at the end of the run and use a 3ft cat 7 cable to connect to your device. By the way on the back of the converter there is a switch that says auto and force, switch it to force. Auto means if your only going to connect this converter to another device and not to another converter. To learn more, go to YouTube for videos on the installation and use of this great product! This media converter is rated for gigabit speed. Multimode fiber used at gigabit speed should be good to about 1,000 meters. So, 200m should be a piece of cake. HTH
