Eastern Armenian Comprehensive Self-Study Language Course

I bought the first edition of this book from Amazon a few years back, when I was first learning Eastern Armenian. I found it incredibly helpful and it quickly became my go-to "Bible" for grammar rules, useful and thematically-grouped vocabulary, and everyday phrases and expressions. It was an excellent accompaniment to the course I was taking back in the States, but given its comprehensiveness, it could also function as a self-study book. There are relatively few resources available for learners of Eastern Armenian, and this book is not only genuinely outstanding, but is also far and away the best and more practical resource I found (and I looked quite a bit). The price seems daunting, but for me it was well worth it, as this became an indispensable resource from Day 1 and really helped answer a lot of questions I had about the language. I recently acquired a copy of the third edition of this book, which improves upon the previous editions by correcting minor errors and adding some more grammatical concepts and areas of vocabulary. VERY highly recommended!!!

This book is designed with the English speaker in mind and does a very good job explaining the differences between Armenian and English. I find those explanations very helpful because they help cement the rules of Armenian in my brain. The book is also designed to allow for self teaching, which is unique among the Eastern Armenian books I've used. Highly recommended!

Just by glancing through the book, you can tell that each lesson is packed with vocabulary and grammar. It has just about everything you need to know. However... it's not necessarily very useful as a "self-study course". For example, I have had about 15 tutoring lessons in Armenian so far, and the first lesson is already very far ahead of where I am.I don't regret getting this book though. I can tell that once I am more advanced I will find this book more useful as a tool to review grammar rules and such.

I am at an advanced intermediate stage of learning the language, and I can thank this book for that. I have been using it for years. I study from it as often as I can, and learn something new from it each time. The example sentences and the vocabulary introduced are perfect for everyday conversation. The book is structured so that it is possible to use it to study on your own -- hence the "self-study" in the title. I recommend it without hesitation. You could pay ten times the cost of this book in tutor fees, and not come away with half the knowledge you will derive from this book.

The author gave me the textbook as an accompaniment to the lessons she was teaching me. I cannot say much about how suitable it is for persons who intend to teach themselves Armenian without any prior knowledge of the language. I stopped studying some time ago, but due to its conciseness and excellent explanations this textbook is very suitable for refreshing and keeping knowledge up to date and, of course, accompanying ongoing lessons. Additional sound recordings of the texts would be highly recommended, especially for autodidacts.
