Solos for the Horn Player With Piano Accompaniment

Just finished a high school S&E competition and though the piece we chose wasn't composed for the french horn, and the judge mentioned that, just how many pieces are, I ask? This book has a lovely selection of songs of varying skill levels...and unlike some it does have a piano accompaniment book (with readable music and well-done editing and composition for the accompanist). You can't perform without an accompanist at these things, whether they be scholarship auditions or competitions.Side Note: The Mason Jones Solos for the Horn Player is mostly covered on a CD by a particular french hornist: Gregory Miller. It's available for MP3 Download here on Amazon and is worth so much more than those terrible perfunctory wooden sample CD's that come with some books. Granted, the Gregory Miller is for auditing only and DOES NOT furnish a blank accompaniment only option.For a younger player, we had chosen the Kirchen Arie by Stradella, and there was no other way to find that song, anywhere on any online site, store or even on freegal. It's a lovely baroque piece that is thrilling to play without any reason or event coming up. If you like to have a youtube or CD version to go to as part of your preparation for performing, etc, the Gregory Miller CD is probably essential if you want inspiration or direction for pieces that are hard or impossible to find in this book. So back to the CD: The performances are not generic and very well done by a reputable pro and a very gifted accompanist--well recorded and polished. Very nice to listen to just on their own. French Horn is just the most beautiful instrument, and this book expands any player's horizons.

There are two books with this ISBN number, the piano part and the horn part. The piano part is a yellow cover. The horn part is a white cover. Ask the seller to verify that both books are included before buying. My daughter needed the horn part for her competition and we only received the piano part. Fortunately, another student had a copy of the horn part and allowed my daughter to borrow it. There is no indication in the books that there are two books association with this ISBN number so it is real easy for the seller to miss it and unknowingly list only one.

My daughter's horn instructor had us get this book of solos because my daughter is at an advanced level for solos, and because this edition comes with the piano accompaniment which is required for many solo competition events. She's only learned one solo so far, but will probably be using this book for other competitions, as well. It would be helpful if this book came with an accompaniment CD for rehearsal purposes like some other solo books do. Luckily, the instructor had a rehearsal CD from another source with this particular solo on it.

We ordered this book but when it came in, the horn part was missing. It did not say it was only the piano accompaniment book. Normally, the instrument part and the piano accompaniment come together.

As others said - missing the horn part. I was skeptical when I read the other reviews, but saw that the most recent one was good so I thought - they finally took that bad copy out of inventory. But nope - I must have gotten it. it was bent on one of the corners and scuffed up, so it would appear that it keeps getting returned and keeps getting added to stock

There was only the piano music in the book. The table of Contents and Index indicates there should be two books, one with Horn music, one with piano music. Returned the book immediately.
