Q: Is this food-safe enough to immerse in sauces? I'm looking for a ruler I can dip into sauces to see how much they have reduced.

Take a piece of spaghetti and dip it into your liquid. Break it off where the wet ends and mark it at the measurement of where you want to reduce (by half, third, quarter, etc.) Throw away when it's done!

Q: What are the dimensions? Amazon's description indicates it is 15" x 5" but the photo clearly shows the length as being 12"

The Mercer Culinary Ruler is definitely 12 x 5 inches. I just measured mine.
