An engaging tale of a man’s journey through this thing called Cancer.
I loved this book! John takes us on an incredible sidecar ride back through time from his days as a BP government executive, to the meeting of his bride, to COVID. He discusses with candor, depth and an incredible sense of dry sassy humor, the emotional ups and downs he experienced during his journey. John gives you his philosophy about life, resiliency and the mindset you must have to live and not just survive. You will laugh out loud, become introspective and take an account of your meaning of life. Thank you John from myself and my Mother, currently battling non-staged cancer, she’s made past the 10 years they gave her.

Cancer Survivor
Mine is prostate. Five weeks since my surgery so this is very fresh for me. Mr. Gore is very on point with his rules/advice. A second opinion can not be over stressed. If this offends your Dr. then he IS NOT the doc for you. Find another Dr. Learn all you can about your type of cancer. You MUST be informed to make an informed decision. Get a notebook and wright all of Mr. Gore's rules in one place. Review them often. They are excellent advice. Mr. Gore includes mush of his work and personal life. Pointing out that life continues even though one has cancer. Attitude is everything. Keep a positive and happy outlook. I wish you a positive outcome with your cancer experience.

A companion guide that will make you laugh, even in the waiting room
I had looked forward to reading John Gore’s book, and for good reason. If I was surprised to laugh out loud while reading a book about cancer, I was even more shocked to do so on page one. For those of us unlucky enough to be touched this illness, this book will be your companion: it will be a friend who makes you laugh in the waiting room, and a pragmatic guide ready with actionable tips when your world seems to fall away. And anyone who is lucky enough to have been spared these experiences has much to gain from Gore’s unsparing, often funny, manifesto of survival.John Gore offers the kind of priceless insights that only a patient could. He is refreshingly frank in detailing his illness, and he employs humor throughout not as a means of avoiding the truth about sickness, but exposing it, in all its absurdity. (Gore’s first question to the doctor: Will this affect my golf game?)Caregivers will relate to Toni—Gore’s wife and his rock throughout. Their team-based approach to his care is a poignant reminder of the salvation we can offer each other in times of struggle. In “Stage Fright” John Gore offers a rare, precious gift to readers: hope. Cancer doesn’t come with a guidebook, but “Stage Fright” comes pretty close.

If you or a loved one is facing cancer...a must read!
A powerful and ingenious account that poignantly grapples with the unexpected diagnose of cancer. The writing is captivating! If you have not read this book and are battling cancer, has a loved one battling cancer, or are a cancer survivor, do yourself a favor and read it. This book is eloquently written and helps one understand the thoughts and feelings occurring day to day in someone’s mind facing cancer and its consequences. It will shed some light in your current situation or prepare you for the possibility of what is to come. Being a cancer survivor, though still dealing with minor aspects of it, and having loved ones facing or having faced the gargantuan battle against cancer, I found this book informative and easy to read. It’s okay to have “stage fright” when facing cancer, but it becomes a more workable situation when one knows what to expect and how to confront it. I give this book five stars and I don’t believe there’s anyone who wouldn’t benefit from reading it. John Gore is an exceptional writer, and Stage Fright: 15 Rules for Coping with Cancer is a book that will not become obsolete until a cure for cancer is discovered.

Excellent story of survival and hope!
I thoroughly enjoyed John Gore’s “Stage Fright"! It is insightful, optimistic and well written. It is informative regarding the author’s life and death battles with very advanced head and neck cancer (twice, 6 years apart) and, subsequently, with critical valvular heart disease (twice,10 years apart). Along the way, he managed to maintain a distinguished career as a high-level executive in international affairs with British Petroleum and, even now, as an independent consultant and writer in government affairs and politics.I was fascinated by the author’s dual cancers and the heroic therapies that eradicated them and then optimized his post-operative functional status. This is a remarkable success story. Of course, many patients with Stage IV cancer will not fare well - regardless of their attentiveness to symptoms and cooperation with healthcare professionals, and in spite of the love and support of family and friends. However, the "15 Rules for Coping with Cancer" should not only help them to receive optimal care, but also assist them in accepting good and bad outcomes.
