Pretty much just traditional vinegar (not provided) and baking soda volcano
This particular kit works as expected. It is essentially just a vinegar and baking soda reaction with food color in this case. It does have that glow in the dark dye to give you a bit more of a cool eruption in the dark. This particular set is well build in terms of the volcano it is a pretty well detailed and for the most part is very easy to clean once you are done which is great. It does come does come with goggles to protect your child's eye and give them the experience of being a scientist. It is a bit odd that it does not provide you vinegar but baking soda it does. You pretty much just do the same thing you would with any baking soda and vinegar volcano. The only thing is you add the dye to the backing soda before you add the vinegar (there is a measuring cup for this). It does not take too much to make this work but it is over pretty quick. Overall I think this is a simple volcano set. The dye does give you a nice glow in the dark feel and it does not take much to make it work. You do not have to stir the dye into the baking so as the reaction pretty much does that. It is over quick though but you can just keep adding more and keep the reaction going.

Fun Science and Craft Activity for young kids
My two 8 year old children had a lot of fun with this set. Their older sibling was not as interested in the painting, he just wanted to take part in the eruption! The mountain is reusable so you can do repeat eruptions. This was a pretty simple set. The longest amount of time for this activity was in waiting for the paint to dry. This would make a fun gift for any science loving kid in your life, especially if they are also into painting crafts or models. The recommended age on the packaging is 8 and up, in fact there's a safety warning stating that it's not intended for children under 8 years old. I think you could use the set in different ways to have it appeal to a wider audience. For example, for younger kids (younger than 8), the younger child could do the painting and stand back while the adult activates the eruption (I don't want to go against the manufacturer and suggest that a child younger than 8 should perform the experiment). For older kids, maybe 10 and up, they could skip the painting part if they're not interested and focus on the eruption and the chemistry behind the eruption.I appreciated that the set even includes safety goggles. I already have a pair because of all the experiments we've done that didn't include them, so it was nice to have another pair for a sibling for this and future activities. There is an included poster with an additional project on the back for making a solar over. On the front of the poster are the instructions, which are clear, and some fun facts about volcanoes. There's also a small section describing the chemical reaction that's taking place in the experiment.Overall I think it's a fun, educational activity that can be adapted to use with ages 5 through 12.

REUSABLE, ENGAGING FUN
The media could not be loaded. My son is 7 and was so excited he didn’t even want to wait to paint it. After he got to experience a couple of eruptions, he went back to paint it. You will need to allow the paint to dry but with a blow dryer it didn’t take much time at all. One of the paint colors is applied last for a glow in the dark effect (actually works).Includes all the supplies you need (barring the vinegar and measuring spoon….we actually used apple cider vinegar b/c it was all we had on hand), is reusable, and is an effective educational tool.VIDEO ATTACHED: shows unboxing / putting kit together / volcanic eruption / glow in the dark pic

Easy to use and it's fun to paint!
The media could not be loaded. This was really fun to do with my daughter. She enjoyed painting the volcano and it was very easy to set up. The kit comes with safety glasses and all the stuff you need to paint and set the volcano up. The only thing you'll need is vinegar. There is a red dye you can add to the baking soda that makes the eruption look like real lava. This was fun to do and really enjoyable. It can be reused too which is nice!

It's just a vinegar/baking soda reaction
This is a legitimate Discovery Kids kit. It's really just to provide a cool background for a vinegar/baking soda reaction. It requires painting, as it's an orange molded plastic that comes in two pieces, loosely attached by two different shaped pegs to ensure proper alignment of the volcano's ridges. The kit includes safety glasses, paints, a paint brush, a packet of baking soda, two small bottles of lava colored dye for the baking soda, a measuring cup, a funnel, a mixing bottle (that screws into the top portion of the volcano and then gets placed into the bottom portion (where the "eruption" takes place), and simple instructions (on the back of which is a bonus guide to build a solar oven with a s'mores recipe). One of the paints is also glow-in-the-dark.A 1/2 tablespoon is required, but not included.Set up is the most time consuming part of this lab set, as it requires several coats of paint, which each require some time to dry before painting over with the next coat. If your children are into painting, great, otherwise the impatient may just want to get on with the mixing. The instructions indicate that the eruptions may wash away some paint, since baking soda and vinegar are both excellent cleaners. So, repainting may be needed for future eruptions if cosmetics are important for your young scientists. Some sort of tray will be needed to contain the messy eruption, but such tray is not included in the set, so you will have to improvise or set it up outside. To a grown up, this is probably a boring thing, but small children will probably enjoy it, at least for the first couple of tries.

Nice gift
Nice gift. A little more simpler than what you'd expect. The paint did not stay but overall a nice concept and good experiment for kids. My son and I had a good time together with it.
