Yamaha Quality at a Reduced price
I've been running Yamaha receivers and studio monitors for over a decade. I paired this with a Monitor Audio SB4 soundar (wife's preference for aesthetics in this house) and some unknown brand in-ceiling surround speakers that came with the house, along with the MusicCast Sub 100. We have a large Great Room that combines the family room, kitchen, and dining room all in one, so we need to move a lot of air to feel the bass and fill the room. The A4A satisfies. I let the YPAO procedure do it's work. It even noticed one surround speaker was wired out of phase. I opted to turn the subwoofer gain to 0db to compensate for the room. Running the app, i can have consistent sound from my garage, through the Great Room, to the Master Bedroom and it's all in sync. This is great for weekend cleaning/project days and for entertaining. The amp sounds great and i didn't have to pull out the manual - everything worked as expected. To be fair, I do have 2 other Yamaha soundbars and am familiar with the MusicCast app on Android so once I got every devices' firmware updated I was able to get everything to work as I hoped. I've reviewed some other DACs and am very happy with the Sabre tech in the A4A. The Surround AI seems to work well with HBO Max, Netflix, and Hulu via an AppleTV 4k, too. Streaming audio from my NAS also works but the interface for doing so is very primitive. Shuffling all audio is possible but buried in an option menu, which is kind of annoying, but once found it works. One bug: don't try to skip songs too fast - the receiver doesn't know what to do and the playback system halts. the remote still responds so you just have to restart a track. My V4A does the same. Buying renewed saved a couple hundred dollars and I've had good luck in the past. I have only had one Yamaha receiver give me any trouble, and that was when it was about 8 years old so I was willing to take the risk on the A4A given it's a younger generation at this point. I'm sure I'll find some more quirks but am happy with the audio quality, 5.1 sound, and MusicCast sync.
