BUY THIS BOOK.
I am completely satisfied with purchasing this book. Out of all the items i have purchased from Amazon, this is by far one of the top five most satisfying purchases i have ever made. I felt as if i was stealing this book because of the wealth of knowledge contained within its pages. It has everything you need to know about windows8-8.1. It is easy to understand and it has pictures to show you the process. All this book needs is a section ob troubleshooting, but thats another subject for a follow-up book. If it does come out i will be there to buy it because the writing is excellent. When it cones tto computers, i have my moments. Most if my moments are due to frustration because of confusing directions that were made to be simple. Simple for whom, though? People with degrees in rocket science? The author explains everything in detail but knows that the average reader wants the simplest and quickest solution so that they can become familiar with this os in the smallest amount of time. Recommended.

Outstanding Book, Easy to Follow Instructions
I cannot say too much about what a great book this is for learning 8.1. The images of the 8.1 screens takes up a lot of space, but that is what makes it such a great book. I got much more out of the book, working on my own, than I could have gotten even from taking a class. I decided how long to spend each day, and which chapters to work on, although I would recommend doing chapters 1-5 in order. After that, pick what you want to learn and use in Windows 8.1. Allow yourself time, as in sessions each day, to learn it. It beats hiring a techie to "set up" your PC because you will know SO much more about 8.1, and not just ask that they revert you back to the old desktop format (Windows 7 and earlier format). Learn 8.1, it's pretty cool, tiles and all. Read the book, you'll understand.

Great book for the technologically challenged :)
This book is easy to read an follow so I really liked that about it. There was no guess work involved and it gave you step by step directions on how to get things done. What I didn't like about it was that there were some things that it didn't cover. One example was how do you add and address and personal information for a contact on Outlook Express. There was nothing for this and I think that would be an important feature. That's why I gave it a 4 star rating. There were a few other things like that. But otherwise a great book and I would recommend it. I bought Teach Yourself Visually Windows 7 for my husband and he likes it.

Because of my age (75) and illnesses I'm not progressing very fast.
I'm trying to find an instructor that is good but affordable to help me but I haven't found one yet! I just try to do a little more each day. At first I tried to do to much to quick. Like Publisher and Word. Now, I'm just sticking with 8.1 to learn the basics. I still don't know how to do a spell check and just basic things like that. Thank you for asking. If you want, check back in a couple of weeks and if you have any suggestions let me know. I live by myself and things are very difficult since I'm disabled. Please advise. Larry LaymanAlso, let me know if there are any books on Publisher and Word that are not too expensive. Thank you. I'm also interested in a Kindle, new or used if they are reasonable in price.

This is one manual that is easy to use
I have other Windows 8 manuals which require a lot of skipping around, and most of the stuff is not relevant to everyone. This one is different because every "lesson" is on two pages, and it's all right there. This is one manual that is easy to use. It's very basic, but it was just what I've wanted. I am on my 5th. computer over the years, and each new Windows version has been a new learning experience. This manual is helpful to the more experienced person and I would also highly recommend it to any one just starting out. Simple, easy to understand, with pictures. I wish I had bought it first.

Teach Yourself Visually are great books!
When I purchased my new laptop with Windows 8.1 I was lost. I had to go online to Microsoft to see how to turn the computer off!I have a Kindle so I had a little knowledge about apps but not how to work with all the ones on 8.1This book explains a lot and you can see pictures of the windows that you are working with not just a lot of words.I have run in a few things that I have had to go online to see how to do it but for the most part this book is VERY helpful.

Thank you Mr. McFedries!Windows 8.1 is probably the most unnecessary upgrade to any windows platform I've ever used---and I've used 'em all. Too much junk! This book has been able to answer my questions (forget calling MS techs) so well, I can actually use the system now. Easy lookups, if you know what you want, a bit harder for a first time user (someone over the age of 16). But that's only because Win 8.1 is so hard to deal with. This manual is a godsend! Until I learned about it, I was ready to go back to using a Mac.

Teaching yourself visually.
With the help of this book, I was able to get started in Windows 8.1. I went from windows XP to 8.1. I was not at all familiar witheven windows 8. Going thru the book and using the steps I was able to get a pretty good understanding and I was able to setup and get on line. There were some things that weren't explained thoroughly but trial and error got me thru. I would recommendthis book. I have the same book for Windows XP. I am a repeat customer and I lean visually.
