Q: I'd like to use this to hold ribbons, are the round rods removable to slide the ribbon bobbins on?

Yes, the rods are held in place with thumb screws on each end, this rack uses tubes that are 5/8" (16mm) in diameter, so as long as the bobbins can fit them, it's an easy task.
