Oyen DigitalU32 Shadow Dura 1TB USB-C Rugged Portable Hard Drive

I have been looking for a Thunderbolt or USB-C SSD capable of backing up the 8TB drive in my 2019 16" Macbook Pro, and wanted one that didn't require an external power supply. This Oyen Digital unit pretty much fits the bill, though is slower than I had hoped. Overall I am happy with the purchase.Pros:Nice small compact size.Runs cool.Seems solidly built.No need for external power (USB-C supplies sufficient power).Cons:USB-C write speeds well short of Thunderbolt 3. A full backup of 5 TB from my Macbook Pro took about 20 hours, averaging about 70MB/s, which is maybe 20% of the advertised peak USB-C rate for this drive. This is about the same as I was getting from a Thunderbolt 2 Lacie disk drive I had been using for backup. Not sure if the rate is being limited by lots of small files on my computer's internal SSD.The USB-C to USB-C cable that came with the U32 shadow did not allow the drive to be recognized by the Mac. The drive LED would light up but it never showed up as a mounted device on the computer. An Apple brand version of the cable worked fine in showing the drive.

This works well with my PS4, I was searching for a external hard drive that would work well for my PS4 and read so many reviews that scared me away from others, I got this on sale and am pleased with it. Any games loaded on it have amazing speed, I don't recognize any load time's anymore for games on the SSD. I will stick with this brand till it burns me. Great price for the storage it holds, I have about another 20 games added to my system. Before I only ever had 5 depending on the size since I have the original PS4 500G storage lol obviously with today's games it wasn't enough. I saw it on sale again and nearly bought another to triple my storage 🤣.Setting up the storage was simple as well as removing is simple as well. I do suggest you remove it when not in use, a storm came through unexpected and due to power loss it almost messed up my device thankfully it didn't so not I simply select remove storage when not using my system before placing it into rest mode.

I bought these to back up my Macs using CCC. They work perfectly. The backups are bootable. The drives are tiny. The customer is happy.I am amending this review. The original drives (I now have 7 from this company) came with plain rubber coated cables. Everything worked great.They now come with braided cables. These cables are utter garbage. If your drive won't connect, it is more likely the cable, not the drive. I only know this because I was able to test the same drive with the two different types of cables.Drives these good should come with decent cables. I don't care about some fancy braid covering; I care about the cables working correctly.

I use this as a backup drive for my Carbon Copy Cloner. I chose it because CCC recommended it and I see why. I've used other drives for this purpose but none has worked as transparently as the U32. I'm on a Mac so I can't speak for a Windows environment; on the Mac it was literally a plug and play. One of the qualities a backup drive should offer is that not only does it do the job (and it does – had a crash and had to restore from the drive and it was flawless!), but you shouldn't even know that it is there. The U32 fills the bill perfectly. Going to purchase another for another workstation – highly recommended!

My Mac did not recognize the U32 Shadow 8TB External SSD drive. I was able to reformat the drive under Applications > Disk Utilities to ExFat, GUID Partition Map. Then the Mac recognized the drive and I was able to copy data onto it. There are articles on the internet on how to do this and ExFat is compatible with Mac and PC. I'm not a tech expert and am passing along the tip to non-techies; if the external drive is not being recognized, it is not dead. Save any data before reformatting the drive.

Sure the 4TB Oyen drive is spendy, but what are your time and data worth? Compared to other external SSDs, the 4TB Oyen drive is a good value. The 8TB version is an even better value. I'll still use spinning platters for archiving data (my 19-year-old archived hard drives still work reliably), but my daily and weekly backup regimens now use Samsung T5 and Oyen U32 SSDs. I'll add more large-capacity Oyen SSDs as my budget allows. I should note that my operating system is MAC's Big Sur 11.4.

I purchased this drive to put into offsite rotation for cloning the boot drive on my iMac. Carbon Copy Cloner (great software!) recommended this device.It is a good value considering its solid-state 1TB, very small, zero noise, undetectable heat and weighs almost nothing. 3 Year Warranty!!I recommend it!9-25-20 Update: I needed some tech support for an issue that came up so I called their phone number and left a VM. They got back to me within 24 hours. They gave me some direction and everything worked out. I was surprised by how prompt, friendly and effective their service and warranty support actually is. Very cool company.

I have been warned that, although SSD drives are much faster, smaller, and better in every way than conventional drives, when they fail, they can fail irretrievably. Dunno to what extent that caveat holds true, but -- just to forestall catastrophe -- I purchased two of these drives (to hold my gigantic iTunes Library), so I can keep one off-site, and switch them periodically. (One should probably do that even with conventional drives, right?) So far, my first U32 Shadow Dura is working perfectly, and I am patting myself on the back for having bought it. I like these little SSD drives so much better than the clunky old conventional external drives that I used to use. (I have another 4TB SSD drive that I use for my Time Machine backups.). I highly recommend this drive to anyone contemplating the purchase of an external drive -- You will not regret the expenditure.

I removed from case and installed inside my older iMac. Works fine.
